Garth Risk Hallberg is the author of A FIELD GUIDE TO THE NORTH
AMERICAN FAMILY.

"Beautiful because of the gentle way the story of two suburban
families unravels for the reader. Beautiful because each of the short
entries that make up the novella is accompanied by a photograph,
sometimes bizarre or haunting, but always a pleasure to behold.
Beautiful because the book itself has all the elements that make the
act of reading seem like an event." -Bookslut

The Pacific Standard Fiction Series aims to showcase the intense and
varied literary energies of Brooklyn by pairing writers from the
borough and beyond. We offer fine stories and appealing beverages in a
civilized setting. In 2008, readings will take place the first and
third Tuesday of every month...more or less.

It's pretty interesting, and there will be plenty more photos soon. I know a lot of you have been breathlessly awaiting the arrival of our fiberglass friend--hopefully this will appease you for the time being. He is getting worked on, he is getting ever closer to completion, and he will be awesome. So go here:

Final plea

Come to comedy night tonight! The comedians will thank you by making you laugh, and Pacific Standard will thank you with ample $3 drink specials on the many exciting and rare Sixpoint brews we have left over from Guy Fawkes Night. And I'll do my famous guinea pig impression for you. Anything, really, just come. After all, when do you get to see an honest-to-god professional comedy show in central Brooklyn with hilarious comedians, no cover, and no drink minimum? Huh?

Monday, November 5, 2007

Two reminders

Guy Fawkes Night looks to be a glorious affair this evening, with seven Sixpoint beers on tap (Apollo, Atlantic Amber, Bengali Tiger, Sweet Action, Brownstone, Righteous Rye, and Belgian Rye). We'll also be showing V for Vendetta all night, in keeping with our Fawkesian theme. On Tuesday at 8:30, you absolutely have to come to see professional comics (some writers of the Colbert Report!) try out material in our back room. We beg, we plead, we debase ourselves. See you around,

John and Jon

We also have an entirely new cask selection, with the Chelsea Standard and the Sixpoint Righteous Rye. Finally, the Sixpoint Bengali Tiger makes its debut here, which was long overdue. It's probably my favorite beer of all time (though the Hoptimus Prime has been making a run for it recently).

We'll be here at 9:30, serving bagels and cream cheese and pouring Bloody Marys. We'll also have some surprise drink specials--come by and ask. Enjoy your extra hour, and see you in a few.

Reminder: Marathon Day Tomorrow!

We'll be open at 9:30 or so (officially, 10) for the marathon tomorrow. Bagels, beer, and the top runners in the world a few feet away. It should be awesome.

Tap update, November 2

The Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA was gone for a few days, but like the ladies, it just can't stay away from me and Jon. It replaces our Anderson Valley Boont (don't worry, more Anderson is on the way). Chelsea Standard has left us, to be replaced with Chelsea's Henry Hudson IPA, a classic American IPA we haven't yet had here at PS. The Standard will return in firkin form before you know it. All those Sixpoint beers you see down there in the "coming up" section are for Guy Fawkes on Monday.

Recent bar photos

A relatively stochastic menagerie of friends, Halloween madness, and dogs:

We Now Have Schaefer

For all of you who have been patiently waiting for us to have cheap macrobrew cans, your agonies are now over. We have cans of Schaefer for $3. We're excited about Schaefer because, as some of you may know, it has a glorious past in Brooklyn, where it built one of the greatest pre-Prohibition breweries in the US, in Red Hook. Schaefer was one of the best-selling, if not the best-selling, beers in the world at one time; and it was the last operating brewery in New York City when it closed in 1976. So you could say that Brooklyn Brewery, Chelsea, and Sixpoint have picked up where Schaefer left off. Schaefer is now owned by Pabst and brewed out of Miller's facilities in Milwaukee, but it's still based on that old Brooklyn recipe.

So join us in reciting Schaefer's old slogan: "What do you hear in the best of circles? Schaefer, all around!"

Guy Fawkes Night Beer Update

Looks like we'll have the following Sixpoint beers on Guy Fawkes Night, November 5. Not quite eight, but six really good beers:

Sweet Action
Brownstone
Bengali Tiger IPA
Belgian Rye
Amber

Cask: Righteous Rye

By the way, we'll also be showing V for Vendetta later on in the evening, in keeping with our general Guy Fawkes theme.

Once again, I wholeheartedly encourage you to stop by. This is going to be a great event, trust us.

Thanksgiving at Pacific Standard

On Thanksgiving Day, we here at Mother Standard would like to coddle anybody who (like us) will be away from home. We're having a potluck beginning at 3ish--if you bring something, you can feel free to eat from others' dishes. Good cheer will abound like Brett Favre touchdown passes on the big projection screen. Why am I so confident about the good cheer? Well, we have a $25 all you can drink special. That's right--all of our noble microbrews, our semi-noble wine, everything. (Those wanting to drink less can enjoy an all-day happy hour instead). Come by--we promise to welcome you into our turkey juice-encrusted arms.

Two recent reviews of the Standard

I'm compiling a fuller list of reviews, but for now, you can check out these two recent reviews, one in the Village Voice and the other in New York Magazine. When I read reviews of our bar, it feels extraordinarily like I personally am being reviewed, so I'm always nervous, but both are positive (yay and so on!):

Guy Fawkes Night Announcement

Pacific Standard and Sixpoint present

Guy Fawkes Night

at Pacific Standard, 82 Fourth Avenue (between St. Mark's and Bergen), Brooklyn,

November 5, 2007, at 8 pm.

Remember remember the fifth of November
Gunpowder, treason, and plot.
I see no reason why gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot...

We at Pacific Standard and Sixpoint think it's high time Americans start remembering and celebrating the most obscure, nerdy, yet coolest holiday in the British Empire, Guy Fawkes Night. Whether or not we're British, Catholic, or Protestant, I think we can all agree that men who try to blow up large buildings should be stopped, and that the successful stopping of these men should be celebrated yearly with beer, toffee, and the destruction of effigies. The uninitiated may find more information on Guy Fawkes Night here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guy_Fawkes_Night

There will be eight Sixpoint beers on tap and, in honor of England, cask, including a brand new Belgian rye. Traditional Guy Fawkes night food will be available, Guy Fawkes-related music will be played, and Pacific Standard is creating a Guy Fawkes pinata that we'll joyfully maim with batons and golf clubs. In addition, a limited amount of awesome Guy Fawkes paraphernalia—tile coasters and magnets--will be available for purchase with Sixpoint beer at a special package price.

Those who show up before 8 pm can enjoy our $1 off happy hour, and people who bring/wear something Guy Fawkes-related (a mask, t-shirt, doll, whatever) will drink at $1 off all night! There will also be abundant specials on certain kegs, to be determined altogether capriciously by Pacific Standard's owners. If all that isn't good enough for you, you've been in New York too long. So:

Remember, remember, on the fifth of November,
to come to the Standard with cheer,
It is our cause that all Brooklyn jaws
Should be filled with toffee and beer.

Six Point Guy Fawkes Day at Pacific Standard

On Guy Fawkes Day, November 5, we'll be having a Six Point event here. There will be eight (8!) Six Point beers on tap, with some special brews not seen before, as well as all kinds of fun Guy Fawkes-related events and discounts. Definitely save the date for now--this is a must--and stay tuned for more details.

Despite ABC's best attempts

We will be showing the Cal game tomorrow. Go Bears! Let's move back up the rankings!

Professional photos of the bar

The photographer who took pictures of us for the Onion article was nice enough to send me a bunch of photos from her shoot, which all look really nice:

Saturday twilight poetry!

Pacific Standard Reading Series: The Prequel
Featuring Ciaran Berry, Abby Chew, and Claire Cheney

Saturday, September 29 -- Reading begins promptly at 8:00 PM.

Pacific Standard Bar
82 Fourth Avenue
Brooklyn, NY

http://www.pacificstandardbrooklyn.com./

Directions:

Pacific Standard is located at 82 Fourth Avenue in Park Slope, Brooklyn, between St. Marks and Bergen Streets. It's a short walk from a dizzying array of subway and commuter rail lines at the Atlantic/Pacific station, namely, the 2, 3, 4, 5, D, N, Q, and R, as well as the Long Island Railroad. New York subway map. After you exit the Atlantic/Pacific station, just walk four blocks south on Fourth Avenue to get to our bar. We're not too much longer a walk from the F and G stop at Bergen Street, and are also close to the B61, B63, and B65 bus lines.

Readers:

Ciaran Berry is een jonge dichter die woont op het verlaten platteland van Noord-Ierland. Or maybe that is the other Ciaran Berry, not our scribe of bog-orchid, moth, and death-wish piano moving whose first book, THE SPHERE OF BIRDS, will be released this spring in North America by Southern Illinois State University Press (as the winner Crab Orchard Series in Poetry Open Competition) and across the sea by Ireland's renowned Gallery Press. You've read his poems recently in most all your favorite journals: Crazyhorse, the Missouri Review, AGNI, and The Threepenny Review. Hailing originally from the Northwest of Ireland, Mr. Berry currently teaches in the Expository Writing Program at New York University.

Abby Chew, the internets tell us, often visits you in your dreams, asking politely to borrow a cup of sugar, a towel, your dog-eared copy of Richard Hugo. In these dreams, which are her poems full of bears, coyotes, auto-repair and lost gloves, you are reminded of the time when "Oolie threaded his bird-bear-body through the gap between night and morning./ He said the mourner's prayer./ His crow-wings filtered the light —/ His bear claws raked rows into the land." A graduate of the Iowa Writer's Workshop, she currently teaches in Ohio, where she teaches Quaker children to care for goats that are later asked to become stew. Her dog's name is Alice.

Recent public meeting minutes inform us that the South 48th Street water main from Old Cheney Road to Claire Avenue is nearing construction. Claire Cheney herself recently graduated from Oberlin College, where she won numerous honors for her poetry, and completed a study of the Maine "wild" blueberry industry. She will gladly challenge any New Jersey blueberry farmers to a one-on-one field hockey match, relying on such transmutating lines as "A sarcophagus of light, bearing the inscription of moths and cottonmouths. / Weeding the asparagus patch, dirt on my fingers, a shattered glint of mica— / I lick my thumb." Ms. Cheney lives near the old Baker Chocolate Factory in Massachusetts.

Our first two theme nights have arrived.

Today we officially begin Mike's Monday Midnight Movie Madness with "Hot Fuzz". "Teen Wolf" is showing next week. Woody and Becca, our lovely Sunday night bartenders, are hosting a pub quiz starting next Sunday at 7:30 pm. It will have both general trivia and a literary bent (get ready for some quote IDs, former English majors).

Call for an artist

Is anyone a skilled pen-and-ink line drawing person? We need someone to help us design a top-secret item that we will be premiering at the bar in a few weeks. E-mail me at john@pacificstandardbrooklyn.com if you or someone you know can participate in this quick, easy, but glorious enterprise.

Onion party at our bar this Wednesday.

Cut-and-pasted:

Wednesday, September 19, 7 - 9 p.m.
Onion Society For The Preservation Of Alcohol
Meeting #28

Onion Society Party

Pacific Standard

This special meeting of The Onion Society For The Preservation Of Alcohol is set for September 19 at Pacific Standard.

As per usual, we'll meet to the honor and the pleasure of Jameson Irish Whiskey (while supplies last) starting at 7 p.m. The Onion Society welcomes all alcohol preservationists over the age of 21.

The Society meets monthly to discuss the issues of greatest import to alcohol preservationists: mainly, alcohol and the endless possibilities it bears. Heretofore, The Society has existed in near secrecy (thanks to poor handling by its publicist) since 1756, its meetings having been the catalyst for many of the greatest events, inventions, and gestures of philanthropy in the past quarter millennium. Among them: the American and French revolutions, nine feet of licorice-string fun, The Beatles' appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show, gunpowder, and orphanages.

If you and your friends plan to attend, please RSVP to nypromo@theonion.com w/ "28th Society RSVP" in the subject.

Football this weekend

I've been trying to get in touch with the Cal alumni association of New York in order to get them to list our bar as an alternate location for viewing Cal football games, but haven't had any luck. What's more, their usual location for viewing Cal games in Manhattan won't be showing the Lousiana Tech game this weekend, and yet they haven't mentioned our bar as a place where interested alumns can see it.

So we're making this plea to our fellow Cal alums: please contact the NYC Cal alumni association and tell them to mention our viewing parties in their weekly events e-mail to NYC Cal alumns. I'll leave the wording to you guys, but mention you're a Cal alum, really enjoy our bar and the viewing parties there, and that you think other Cal alumns might be interested in our bar as an alternate viewing location. You should e-mail their president, Natasha, at derivi@yahoo.com.

Thanks for joining us in our alumni-reaching crusade. See you this weekend!

A glorious first weekend/experiments in controlled delirium

Excuse any fuzziness in this post, since Jon and I have been working nonstop since Wednesday. The 12 and 16 hour days tend to add up into a kind of long day, glorious nonetheless, since we're actually working for ourselves and our own idea. We've been continually impressed and flattered by how many people have come by who have read our blog, are from the West Coast, or are hopheads like us. Working here alone for so long gave us the idea we were in some kind of vacuum--that appears to be not the case at all. We really look forward to meeting more of you soon.

In more pragmatic news, we will have the Cal-Louisiana Tech game on Saturday, for the Bear fans out there. We're also near to completing our initial food and liquor inventory buys, so you can expect more options in both those categories soon. We're training other bartenders who should start working on Wednesday or so. Our bar ethicist and therapist are fielding questions, and we've placed a public gentlemanly-or-ladylike-prediction-recording device near our bulletin board for your use. Finally, the Fortnight of Fury is going swimmingly, with several people vying for the overall lead, and slaving for tiny golden stars in ways not seen since first grade.

So many taps!

Some of the first customers milling about.

The "boob" mirror above the faux fireplace. Looks nice, no?

If you look closely, the sign says 'OPEN.'

Thanks everyone for making the opening!
