Please join us on December 6th at 7pm at the Pacific
Standard Bar in Brooklyn to hear readings from (and

of China , and gluing his over-determined comps to the
stairwell wall in Willis, he began writing poems. His
first collection, Forge, was published by Coffee House
Press in 2005, and a second book, Surface to Air, will
appear from Coffee House in 2009. A recipient of
fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts
and the New York Foundation for the Arts, he now lives
in Brooklyn .

Since getting his start as a rapper during Reed
Wallsmith sets at the Cave in the late 1990s, Chris
Martin has lived in San Francisco, St. Paul, and
Brooklyn, where he now resides. He is the author of
American Music, the 2006 winner of the Hayden Carruth
Award selected by C.D. Wright. He is proud to be part
of the Carleton Renaissance, including Karl Krause,
Ted Mathys, Amanda Nadelberg and countless others.

Save the date: amazing fiction reading in December

A National Book Award nominee at Pacific Standard? That's right: Joshua Ferris, author of Then We Came to the End (Little, Brown), nominated for this year's National Book Award, will read on December 18, with Porochista Khakpour, author of Sons and Other Flammable Objects (Grove), as part of our initial Fiction Night. More info below:

The Pacific Standard Fiction Series - Inaugural Night
Tuesday, Dec. 18th, 7:00 p.m.
82 Fourth Avenue, Brooklyn, New York. (between St. Marks and Bergen)

featuring Joshua Ferris and Porochista Khakpour
hosted by Garth Risk Hallberg

Books available on-site!
Drink specials to be chosen by dartboard!

Joshua Ferris' debut novel, THEN WE CAME TO THE END, was a finalist
for this year's National Book Award. Mr. Ferris' shorter fiction has
appeared in the BEST NEW AMERICAN VOICES series and the NEW STORIES
FROM THE SOUTH series, and in THE IOWA REVIEW and PRAIRIE SCHOONER. He
lives in Brooklyn.

"Expansive, great-hearted and acidly funny....Even after moving on and
rebuilding their lives, the employees who exit Ferris's unnamed firm
come to miss it, the drudgery, the infuriations, the hours spent with
'this person or that who rankled and bugged and offended angels in
heaven.' And the reader will be able to empathize, coming to the end
of this perceptive and darkly entertaining novel."
- New York Times Book Review

Porochista Khakpour's debut novel, SONS AND OTHER FLAMMABLE OBJECTS,
has been named an "Editor's Choice" by The New York Times and one of
"Fall's Best" by The Chicago Tribune. Ms. Khakpour graduated from the
Johns Hopkins University Writing Seminars M.A. program, and has
written for The Chicago Reader, The Village Voice, and Paper, among
others. Born in Iran and raised in Los Angeles, she now lives in
Brooklyn.

"The characters burst from the page in fiery exchanges, while their
chaotic inner lives are conveyed with witty precision....Khakpour's
comic sense of familial tensions - particularly father-son enmity - is
infectious." - The New Yorker

Garth Risk Hallberg is the author of A FIELD GUIDE TO THE NORTH
AMERICAN FAMILY.

"Beautiful because of the gentle way the story of two suburban
families unravels for the reader. Beautiful because each of the short
entries that make up the novella is accompanied by a photograph,
sometimes bizarre or haunting, but always a pleasure to behold.
Beautiful because the book itself has all the elements that make the
act of reading seem like an event." -Bookslut

The Pacific Standard Fiction Series aims to showcase the intense and
varied literary energies of Brooklyn by pairing writers from the
borough and beyond. We offer fine stories and appealing beverages in a
civilized setting. In 2008, readings will take place the first and
third Tuesday of every month...more or less.

Final plea

Come to comedy night tonight! The comedians will thank you by making you laugh, and Pacific Standard will thank you with ample $3 drink specials on the many exciting and rare Sixpoint brews we have left over from Guy Fawkes Night. And I'll do my famous guinea pig impression for you. Anything, really, just come. After all, when do you get to see an honest-to-god professional comedy show in central Brooklyn with hilarious comedians, no cover, and no drink minimum? Huh?

Monday, November 5, 2007

Two reminders

Guy Fawkes Night looks to be a glorious affair this evening, with seven Sixpoint beers on tap (Apollo, Atlantic Amber, Bengali Tiger, Sweet Action, Brownstone, Righteous Rye, and Belgian Rye). We'll also be showing V for Vendetta all night, in keeping with our Fawkesian theme. On Tuesday at 8:30, you absolutely have to come to see professional comics (some writers of the Colbert Report!) try out material in our back room. We beg, we plead, we debase ourselves. See you around,

John and Jon

Sunday, November 4, 2007

We also have an entirely new cask selection, with the Chelsea Standard and the Sixpoint Righteous Rye. Finally, the Sixpoint Bengali Tiger makes its debut here, which was long overdue. It's probably my favorite beer of all time (though the Hoptimus Prime has been making a run for it recently).

We'll be open at 9:30 or so (officially, 10) for the marathon tomorrow. Bagels, beer, and the top runners in the world a few feet away. It should be awesome.

Tap update, November 2

The Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA was gone for a few days, but like the ladies, it just can't stay away from me and Jon. It replaces our Anderson Valley Boont (don't worry, more Anderson is on the way). Chelsea Standard has left us, to be replaced with Chelsea's Henry Hudson IPA, a classic American IPA we haven't yet had here at PS. The Standard will return in firkin form before you know it. All those Sixpoint beers you see down there in the "coming up" section are for Guy Fawkes on Monday.
