Fernet, finally!

As you might have noticed, we are, ahem, kind of a northern California bar, but for a long time we haven't carried the essential northern California (via Italy and Argentina) spirit, Fernet. That is no more! From now on, you can order Fernet with your bartender, however you like it--a little bit straight up or a larger pour on the rocks. It's just $6 for a small pour or $7 for a larger one. If you haven't tried it, it's lovely and at least worth a little sip. You won't be disappointed.

Final DadWagon Presents December 12 at 7 pm.

Okay, guys, this is it: the final installment of DadWagon Presents, our somewhat monthly series featuring (pro)creative writers expounding upon their fatherhood triumphs and failures (mostly the latter). If you've been wanting to see what all the hubbub is about, this is your last chance to do so.

To mark the occasion, we'll be giving away FREE BEER! Or at least, 32 free beers (and maybe more, depending on how many of those beers we, the editors of DadWagon.com, happen to consume).

So, this Wednesday, leave the kids at home and come see:

• Christopher Bonanos, the author of the recently released Instant: The Story of Polaroid, is a senior editor at New York Magazine and, far more importantly, a founder and emeritus editor of DadWagon. His 3-year-old son, Alex, appears in hundreds and hundreds of photos.

• Joshua David Stein began his career as an editor for Gawker.com and has served as editor-at-large at OUT magazine, senior editor at Departures magazine, editor of Black Ink, and editor-in-chief of BlackBook magazine. His work has appeared in the New York Times, New York, The Guardian, Maxim, OUT, Details, blah blah blah. He lives in Morningside Heights and is the father of Achilles Heeren Stein, 11 months, and the husband of Ana Maria Heeren, 372 months.

City Harvest Food Drive, November 16-December 16.

Pacific Standard is pleased to announce that we'll be participating in City Harvest's food drive. Starting today and running through December 16 or whenever we reach 100 pounds of food, bring your non-perishable food items to the bar and we'll donate them to City Harvest. The basics on the drive and what items are most needed:

With the support of generous New Yorkers, City Harvest will rescue and deliver over 42 million pounds of food this year. Food drives keep our trucks stocked, helping to feed the more than 1 million New Yorkers who face hunger each year.

Most needed foods: Canned fruit, canned vegetables, peanut butter (plastic jars), mac and cheese (packaged), hot and cold cereal (packaged, family-sized)

More information about what to donate can be found here:

http://cityharvest.org/donate-food/donation-drives

We feel like an anorexic saying this, but let's get to 100 pounds by December 16th!

Our non-marathon marathon Sunday.

Since the NYC Marathon isn't going to happen Sunday, we figured we should party it up for charities to make up the difference. Here's our hurricane relief effort:

--We will open at noon as usual.

--$1 for each drink we sell goes to the Red Hook Initiative, who are helping one of the best neighborhoods in NYC recover from the impact of the hurricane. http://www.rhicenter.org/

--We are still going to run a grill outside; any tips go to the Red Hook Initiative.

--We'll have our famous Bloody Marys for $7 a pint (with, again, $1 per drink going to RHI).

So let's pretend like the marathon is happening and perhaps run around the block, person by person. With donations!

October 30 poetry reading canceled.

Unfortunately, due to the upcoming weather we've canceled the reading for the 30th. We look forward to doing it in the future, though, once our readers and audience can more easily make it.

Award-winning poet John Brehm October 30 at 7:30 pm.

Taking the reader from the subways of New York City to the savannas of Paleolithic Africa to the transplant ward of Kyoto University Hospital, John Brehm's new collection of poems, Help Is on the Way, is enlivened by the same subtle music, penetrating wit, and emotional honesty that have won him high praise over the years.

John Brehm’s poems have appeared in Poetry, The Gettysburg Review, The Southern Review, Gulf Coast, Barrow Street, Prairie Schooner, the Missouri Review and many other journals and anthologies. He is author of Sea of Faith, winner of the 2004 Brittingham Prize in Poetry, and associate editor of The Oxford Book of American Poetry. He lived in New York City for many years and now resides in Portland, Oregon.

More info on the Incredible Mild

debuting tomorrow! This is straight from the Sixpoint horse's mouth:

"This beer was made using a brewing process known as parti-gyle brewing. On Sept 14th, Sixpoint brewed a barleywine using only the richest of the wort to create The Old Redhooker Barleywine Ale. Once they collected what they needed for the barleywine, they then collected the remaining sugar from the grain to create a second unique beer that we are happy to introduce to you as The Incredible Mild Ale. This is a low alcohol session-able beer with a 'no-waste' brewing approach. The color is amber. The aroma is hop forward with a blend of Goldings and Fuggle in the nose. It's a dry beer with a crisp finish. The flavor is balanced between the low bitterness & maltiness with subtle toffee and nutty notes."

Pacific Standard and Sixpoint celebrate our 5th anniversary!

We recently celebrated our 5th anniversary, but we thought that a 5th anniversary deserves more than just one party. So we collaborated with Sixpoint in order to bring you several weeks of rare beers from their cellar. Starting on the 10th, we'll tap a different delicious curiosity from Sixpoint each Wednesday for five straight Wednesdays (get it?). Here's the tentative schedule (with links to beer info; we don't have much info yet on the first two but will put it up when we have it):

October 10: The Incredible Mild (brand-new, limited edition)
October 17: French Saison (limited edition)
October 24: Mad Scientists #12: Goser the Gozerian (limited edition)
October 31: 2010 Gorilla Warfare (last keg in existence)
November 7: Mad Scientists #3: Big Sticke Double Alt (last keg in existence)

So as Quintana would say, you got a date Wednesday, man. Wooo! Come as early as possible, since these are all single kegs and will go very quickly.

Monday, October 1, 2012

The debates and election.

As we did four years ago, we'll be showing the debates (both presidential and vice) on our big screens with audio. If you want to watch the debates, please arrive early in order to make sure you get space, since it will be limited (not to mention that the debates may have to share our space with A's playoff games, results of the last few games of the season pending). We'll also, of course, have the election results on November 6. Again, get here early for that because we can only admit so many people into the bar. We look forward to seeing you and yelling/celebrating/crying together!

September 26, 7 pm: DadWagon Presents: Theodore Ross.

Join Theodore Ross for a reading from his new book, Am I a Jew?, recently published by Hudson Street Press.

“I was nine years old when my mother forced me to convert to Christianity…”

Theodore Ross was nine years old when he moved with his mother from New York City to the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Once there his mother decided, for both personal and spiritual reasons, to have her family pretend not to be Jewish. Theodore went to an Episcopal school, where he studied the Bible, sang in the choir, and even took communion. Later, as an adult, he wondered: Am I still Jewish?

Seeking an answer, Ross travels around the country and to Israel, visiting a wide variety of Jewish communities. From “Crypto-Jews” in New Mexico and secluded ultra-devout Orthodox towns in upstate New York to a rare Classical Reform congregation in Kansas City, Theodore tries to understand himself by experiencing the diversity of Judasim.

Quirky and self-aware, introspective and impassioned, Am I a Jew? is a story about the universal struggle to define a relationship (or lack thereof) with religion.

It's a ways off, but we wanted to give you an early heads-up on a special poetry reading we'll be doing in late October (namely, the 30th at 7:30 pm) with Philip Fried and John Brehm. The rough details on your illustrious readers:

Philip Fried has published five books of poetry, the most recent being Early/Late: New and Selected Poems (Salmon, 2011). Publishers Weekly called that book “skillful and memorable,” and The Literary Review declared, “In realms between and including the Almighty and actuarial tables, Fried speaks every language faithfully and eloquently. Rejoice! Read!”

DadWagon reading August 22 at 7 pm.

DadWagon Presents: Loinfruit, Meltdowns, and Weeknight Drinking

Every month, DadWagon Presents brings three procreative writers to Pacific Standard to tell parenting tales that may make you laugh, will probably make you cringe with self-recognition, and will almost definitely send you to the bar for another pint. The next one is at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, August 22, so leave the kids at home (please!) and come see:

• Benjamin Anastas is the author of the novels An Underachiever’s Diary and The Faithful Narrative of a Pastor’s Disappearance, which was a New York Times notable book. Other work has appeared in The Paris Review, Harper’s, The New York Times Magazine, Bookforum, and is forthcoming in The Best American Essays 2012. His memoir Too Good to Be True will be published in October and will cost his 5-year-old son a small fortune in future therapy.

Brian Braiker, a former Newsweek and Rolling Stone staff writer, is a senior editor of Parenting magazine. He loves one of his daughters more than the other, but he’ll never tell which.

David J. Rosen is the author of the novel I Just Want My Pants Back, as well as the creator and executive producer of the MTV series of the same name. He is also the author of the nonfiction book What’s That Job and How the Hell Do I Get It?, and his writing has appeared in publications like Esquire and The New York Times. Rosen lives in Brooklyn and has the stroller arms to prove it.

May cocktail of the month!

Now that Rick Santorum has left a gaping, frothy hole in our hearts and our cocktail menu, we decided to hop on the bandwagon with everyone else and create a new cocktail for the rest of the campaign season: the Mint Rumney. It's mint, Rogue light rum (to prove that Mitt is as freewheeling and Tea Party-friendly as he says he is), grapefruit juice, and bitters, topped with a bit of Prosecco (to show you that Mitt is still a classy guy who won't offend the big money in the party). Come by and try one. You really have no other option.

Baseball season is on!

We have the MLB package as usual, and will be showing all the games we can on our two big projection screens, first-come first-served. If you have a large party, let us know in advance via e-mail (pacificstandardbrooklyn --at-- gmail.com) and we can schedule you. We'll also be doing an A's fan special: come in to the bar during an A's game and tell your bartender you're a fan, and you get $1 off Sierra Nevada pints. Let's go Oakland!

New and exciting beers!

Every once in a while, we have such a fantastic lineup of tap beers that we have to brag about it. Here's a sampling of the rare and impressive beers we currently have on tap (including our first-ever Canadian microbrew!):

Green Flash Palate Wrecker (San Diego, CA; $7/12 oz). This imperial IPA has strong grassy and citrusy hop aromas. The flavor is full-bodied, with just enough caramel hops to balance the huge hop presence. 9.0% ABV.

Le Bilboquet L’Affriolante (Saint-Hyacinthe, QB; $6/16 oz). This spiced ale smells like a red ale spiked with maple syrup. The taste is of slightly toasted amber malt with a hint of honey. The clean finish keeps it from leaving too much sweetness behind. 7.0% ABV.

Napa Smith Bonfire (Napa, CA; $6/12 oz). This imperial porter has a medium-full body, with complex coffee, chocolate and dark caramel flavors. The smooth, robust texture will remind you of the winter that never was. 8.0% ABV.

Peak Organic King Crimson (Portland, ME; $6/12 oz). This imperial red ale is loaded with hops, along with plenty of malts and a touch of maple syrup to give it a buttery smoothness. Flavors of caramel, fruit, and toffee give way to a bittersweet finish. 9.3% ABV.

Stone Vertical Epic 2011 (Escondido, CA; $6/12 oz). The latest installment in Stone’s Vertical Epic series is a Belgian-style amber ale brewed with cinnamon and Anaheim chilies from New Mexico’s legendary Hatch Valley. The Belgian yeast produces some banana and clove flavors up front, while the Pacific Jade hops and the chilies provide a warm spiciness at the end. 9.4% ABV.

Come by soon to get a taste of these. They won't last long!

St. Patrick's Day at Pacific Standard.

An early heads-up: as we do with most ridiculous corporate "holidays," Pacific Standard will serve as your anti-St. Patrick's Day headquarters. If you want to go out Saturday but don't want green throw-up on you, come here for a drink in somewhat more mellow surroundings.

The NCAA Tournament, Cal, and our bracket challenge.

As usual, we'll be opening early, at noon, on Thursday to show all the NCAA Tournament games possible. (We always open at noon Friday-Sunday.) We have the package, and can show two different games at a time on our two large projection screens. It'll be first-come, first-served--just ask your bartender if there's a game you're interested in. But if you have a large group interested in a specific game, let us know in advance (fiatlux --at-- pacificstandardbrooklyn.com) and we'll see what we can do about reserving a screen for you.

If you're a Cal fan, the first Cal game is at Wednesday at 9 pm against South Florida. We'll have it on both our big screens. If we win, that means another game on Friday, and then, well, let's not get ahead of ourselves.

In related news, we'll be doing our Pacific Standard bracket challenge. If you want to be involved and possibly gain glorious rewards, ask your bartender for details; they can print you out a bracket.

And one other thing: if you're doing the ESPN Tournament Challenge online contest thingy, join Pacific Standard's group, in addition to any others you may be members of. Go here to sign up:

http://games.espn.go.com/tcmen/en/frontpage

Our group name is Pacific Standard, and the password is "gobears". Oh, and to avoid any confusion, this has nothing to do with the bar's own pen and paper tournament pool. It's just for fun.

Kings County at Pacific Standard.

Big Pacific Standard news: we're finally carrying local craft spirits, namely the moonshine from the esteemed Kings County Distillery right here in Brooklyn. A little information about them:

Kings County Distillery is New York City’s oldest operating whiskey distillery, the first since before Prohibition. Kings County makes hand-crafted bourbon and moonshine out of a 325-square foot room in five, 8-gallon stills. Our moonshine recently won “Best in Category” for corn whiskey at the American Distilling Institute’s Craft Spirits Conference.

This whiskey is available here in two different ways:

1. Neat as a sweet, smooth, complex sipping drink ($9). This isn't your great-grandpappy's moonshine. It's incredibly easy-drinking and gives your stomach a nice warm glow.

2. In our March cocktail of the month (and possibly beyond), The Corn Holed Fashioned ($10): Kings County corn moonshine, sugar, orange, bitters, cherry.

You have to try this stuff! Come by during happy hours (Monday-Thursday 4-8 pm, Friday 12-8 pm) when you can get it for $1 off, or on our cocktail Wednesdays, where all cocktails are $1 off all night. In addition, just to kick things off right, we'll be doing $1 off Kings County drinks all night Monday-Wednesday of this coming week. Just ask for the Kings County special.
