Our very own Colin Cheney's first-ever book launch, plus Kimiko Hahn's book launch, April 29 at 8 pm.

Please join us on Thursday, April 29th for a creature double feature: the book launch for Colin Cheney's HERE BE MONSTERS and Kimiko Hahn's TOXIC FLORA. The poets will be reading from their new collections, and signing copies of their books. Introductions by R.A. Villanueva.

“Kimiko Hahn stands as a welcome voice of experimentation and passion.”—Bloomsbury Review. For Kimiko Hahn, the language and imagery of science open up magical possibilities for the poet. Inspired by articles from the weekly “Science Times” section of the New York Times, Hahn explores identity, extinction, and survival. With these elegant, ardent poems, Hahn reaffirms her position as an artist of both “daring lyricism” (Eavan Boland) and “rigorous intelligence” (Mark Doty). Kimiko Hahn is the author of several books of poetry, including THE NARROW ROAD TO THE INTERIOR, THE ARTIST'S DAUGHTER, MOSQUITO AND ANT. Her many honors include the American Book Award. She lives in New York City.

"A beautifully balanced concoction—now simple and direct, now oblique and complex—of careful science, remote lore, and immediate feeling, all conjuring an atmosphere of skeptical wonder that the poet shares with us."—Eamon Grennan. Pollination and endangerment loom large in HERE BE MONSTERS, as do the binaries of creation and destruction. In his poems Cheney explores the various types of damage with which humans are so closely entwined, including our encroachment on nature, our propensity to give in to our worst impulses, and the havoc that our cells can wreak on our own bodies—"the extraordinary touches the ordinary, and something changes in us” (Yusef Komunyakaa). Winner of the National Poetry Series, HERE BE MONSTERS is Cheney's debut collection. (http://www.colincheney.com)

More details on Mimsy storytelling a week from Monday.

Mimsy Storytelling, Season One, Show One
"My First Time"

Mimsy proudly presents its inaugural show at Pacific Standard, with storytellers from the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater and the People's Improv Theater. The show, entitled "My First Time," follows first-time experiences from several walks of life.

All stories for Mimsy are autobiographical and are presented live, without notes. Our performers for the evening are Olivia Henderson, Caitlin Brodnick, Miguel de Leon, David Stadler, Carolina Barlow, Andrew Linderman, and Gabrielle Stern.

PERFORMER BIOS

Olivia Henderson is a writer, improviser, and storyteller who lives in Hell’s Kitchen. She has told stories at the People’s Improv Theater, Dirty South Improv Comedy Theater, and many a bar. For more information – and cat photos – visit oliviahenderson.com.

Caitlin Brodnick is originally from Maryland and is now currently living in Queens, New York with her amazing boyfriend and her little sister. She is a receptionist by day and a comedian by night, but she is always crazy.

Miguel de Leon is a Brooklyn-based storyteller originally from California. He has told stories at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre under the direction of Margot Leitman. If he’s not telling stories, he’s improvising at the Upright Citizens Brigade or peddling noodles at Momofuku Noodle Bar in the East Village.

David Stadler is an actor / producer / writer / comic / tutor / temp / cat owner. He was most recently seen on the Biography Channel saving an Erik Estrada look-alike from a re-enactment. Find out more at david-stadler.com.

Carolina Barlow is a sophomore in college. She enjoys yoga, short stories, and naps. She is very allergic to poison oak. She loves money.

Andrew Linderman is a writer, comedian and performer living in Brooklyn. Since moving to New York last year, Andrew has studied improv, sketch and storytelling with a number of talented performers at the Upright Citizens Brigade, the Atlantic Theater, and HB Studios. When he’s not performing around the city, you can usually find him riding his bike around Brooklyn or stocking cans of beans at your local grocery store. If you see him, ask him for a recommendation for a gluten-free dessert.

Gabrielle Stern is a student of the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre. She lives in Chelsea, New York with her two chubby chihuahuas.

U.S.-England match June 12.

Because the U.S.-England match on June 12 at 2:30 pm is going to be such a big event, we're selling tickets in advance, and hiring a doorperson, for crowd control purposes. This way we can all have a bit of space to stretch out, and won't have to worry about being shoulder-to-shoulder. Your ticket will come with a free beer, and will cost $8 in order to pay for said beer and the doorperson we'll need to have. You can buy them starting immediately here at the bar; just ask your bartender. (The ticket doesn't mean you shouldn't tip your bartender for your beer!)

We may or may not need to regulate admission to other U.S. games. If we do think a given game will be crowded, we'll be selling tickets at the door, first-come, first-served. Any questions, just e-mail us. This World Cup should be awesome. U.S.A. and so forth.

Anchor tasting event April 15 at 8 pm.

Save the date: on Thursday, April 15, at 8 pm, we'll be having an amazing Anchor tasting event. They're debuting a fall seasonal called the Humming Ale. It's a highly hopped pale ale and will be available from August to early November, but those of us in the Pacific Standard crowd get to preview it sooner. Be here so you can brag to your friends. There will also be giveaways and specials, as per usual.

NCAA Tournament Challenge final standings.

Though there is still one game to play, our bar challenge is over, since nobody picked Butler or Duke to be in the final game. So the final standings are the same as the ones we put up several days ago:

John R 2: 242
Aaron: 227
Sean: 215
John R 1: 213
Mike C: 212
Ray: 175
Malcolm: 166
Jon Stan: 142
Glynn S: 140
Mike H: 115
Evan S: 91

Thanks to all for playing.

Opening night/day baseball schedule.

--On Sunday night, our pub quiz will preclude the possibility of showing all but the very beginning and very end of the Yankees-Red Sox game. You can go to, like, any other bar in New York to see it. Sorry.
--On Monday, we'll be showing the Giants-Astros game at 7 pm, and the A's-Mariners game at 10 pm.

Otherwise, the usual rules apply--first-come, first-served, with the exception that A's fans always get priority in TV choices. But we have two screens, and games start at all kinds of different times, so there's a good chance we can have your game. Asking in advance is always recommended; e-mail us or call us.
