FEATURED POETS

Phillis Levin is the author of four volumes of poetry, Temples and Fields, The Afterimage, Mercury, and May Day. She is the editor of The Penguin Book of the Sonnet. Her many honors include the Poetry Society of America’s Norma Farber First Book Award, a Fulbright Scholar Award to Slovenia, the Amy Lowell Poetry Travelling Scholarship, and fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts. She is a professor of English and the poet-in-residence at Hofstra University and lives in New York.

Oliver de la Paz is the author of three collections of poetry, Names Above Houses, Furious Lullaby (SIU Press 2001, 2007), and the forthcoming Requiem for the Orchard (U. of Akron Press 2010), winner of the Akron Prize for poetry chosen by Martìn Espada. He co-chairs the advisory board of Kundiman, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the promotion of Asian American Poetry. A recipient of a NYFA Fellowship Award and a GAP Grant from Artist Trust, his work has appeared in journals like Virginia Quarterly Review, North American Review, Tin House, Chattahoochee Review, and in anthologies such as Asian American Poetry: The Next Generation. He teaches at Western Washington University.

John Murillo is the author of the poetry collection, Up Jump the Boogie. A graduate of New York University's MFA program in creative writing, he has received fellowships from Cave Canem, the New York Times, the Wisconsin Institute for Creative Writing, and the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, Massachusetts. His work has appeared in such publications as Callaloo, Court Green, Ninth Letter, and Ploughshares, and is forthcoming in Angles of Ascent: a Norton Anthology of African-American Poetry. Currently, he is visiting assistant professor of creative writing at Cornell University.

Football season's here

and as usual we have the NFL package and all the relevant college football packages. We'll be showing any games you ask for (first come, first served) on our two big projection screens. Every Cal game that's on TV will be shown here, and once again, we're the official Cal alumni bar in Brooklyn; a percentage of proceeds from Cal games will be donated to a Cal scholarship fund. The new special for this year: Cal fans get $1 off everything right after any Cal field goal or touchdown, which we pray shall be copious. The first Cal game is Saturday at 4 p.m. against U.C. Davis, and we'll definitely have it. Go Bears!

The special Sixpoint beer for our anniversary on September 14th will be a West Coast IPA, in honor of our roots. We're currently brainstorming name ideas for the beer, so feel free to chime in on here or via e-mail. We'll also have a bunch of other rare and interesting Sixpoint beers on tap. Not to be missed.

Two exciting new brews.

We just tapped a couple fantastic and rarely seen beers here at the Standard. These supplement several other interesting and lovely beers, like Green Flash West Coast IPA, Bear Republic Racer X, and Greenport Harbor Black Duck Porter. It's a very good lineup right now. Descriptions of the brand-new beers below.

On tap:

Dark Horse Crooked Tree IPA (Marshall, MI; $6/16 oz). Inspired by West Coast IPAs, but brewed with Michigan style, the Crooked Tree is heavily dry hopped to give it a big aroma of pine and citrus. The flavors are big, yet very balanced between fresh hops and malt. 6.0% ABV.

On cask:

Lagunitas Undercover Investigation Shut-Down Ale (Petaluma, CA; $6/12 oz). This Imperial Mild was brewed to remember the 2005 undercover investigation into pot-smoking at Lagunitas’ brewery events, culminating in a few arrests and a 20-day shutdown of the brewery. Plenty of hops up front; while brown sugar, fruit, and alcohol dominate the taste, it’s remarkably smooth and dry. 9.7% ABV.
